Regular exercise offers many health benefits for people with Type 1 diabetes, but managing blood glucose levels before and during physical activity can be challenging. Both low and high blood sugar levels can affect performance, confidence, and overall exercise experience.
A recent study found that lactose and galactose, two naturally occurring milk sugars, may help support more stable blood glucose levels during exercise compared with dextrose, a fast-acting and more common form of glucose. In the study, these low-glycaemic carbohydrates were associated with fewer blood sugar fluctuations while also helping reduce time spent in low blood sugar ranges.
These findings highlight the potential role of low-glycaemic milk sugars as a pre-exercise nutrition strategy for people with Type 1 diabetes.
