How Whey Protein may support metabolic health

Whey protein is an easy addition to the diet to support muscles and muscle growth, and new research suggests it may also help support heart and metabolic health when combined with physical activity.

Proteins don’t just support muscles — they also play a role in how the body handles fats and sugars in the blood. Researchers from the Department of Musculoskeletal and Ageing Science of the University of Liverpool, UK, have studied whether whey protein isolate can help improve markers linked to heart and metabolic health, such as cholesterol and blood fat levels.

What Did the Research Find?

Across the studies analysed, whey protein supplementation was associated with modest improvements in certain blood markers, particularly reductions in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in some groups.

This suggest that whey protein may be a useful, simple and effective dietary option to support cardiovascular and metabolic health, especially when combined with an active lifestyle.
